Diesel Particulate Filters

Polluting emissions regulations have led leading carmakers to incorporate a new component in the exhaust line: Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) There are several versions of this technology, including the DPF Additive, which require the use of an appropriate diagnostic tool.

This Technology is already present on more than three million vehicles in circulation.

There are two phases in the operation of a particle filter: storage of soot (The combustion waste) and regeneration. During the storage phase, the DPF accumulates the soot and discharges the processed gases. A pressure sensor connected to the filter monitors the filter load status and triggers the regeneration process. The Regeneration phase consist of eliminating the soot by combustion. To do this, the filter must reach a temperature close to 550ºC. However, this temperature is only reached if the engine is used heavily (at high speed over many miles, e.g. on the motorway). In this case, we speak of spontaneous regeneration.

With city driving, the exhaust gas temperature is insufficient to eliminate particles, so it is necessary to combine post-injection with the use of an additive that lowers the combustion temperature of the soot to destroy them. The whole process is electronically controlled and requires an electronic maintenance operation when the DPF is replaced or the additive tank is filled.
